Earlier this year hackers in India affiliated with hacking group ‘Anonymous’ released details stating that they had possession of source code from Symantec products ranging from Anti-virus to remote system access. Symantec has verified that is is true and is due to a system breach in 2006, but some applications are still vulnerable. Read more

Apple’s MagSafe charger replacement settlement

Apple has reached a settlement regarding the MagSafe power adapter cable fraying and shorting issue. The affected units are the 60w and 85w versions with the “T” power connector.  With repeated use the power cord becomes frayed at the strain relief or pulls apart from the charging plug. In both cases the wires have been found to short out and over heat causing a fire hazard. Read more

HP drops WebOS devices and will spin off PC business

Today HP announced that they were dropping all development of WebOS devices including the TouchPad and the WebOS phones. In addition they will be spinning off the PC side of their business. They have also purchased a company called Autonomy (Enterprise Information Management) for $10 billion. What will this mean for users of HP PCs and the TouchPad? Read more

Alert: Avast A/V seems to break Windows validation

It appears that the Avast! V6 is breaking the Microsoft Windows validation. The issues seems to affect more users running Windows Vista SP1 but it is not limited to these users.  Microsoft forums have been seeing more users experiencing the ‘non-genuine’ notifications with a code of Licensing Data–>C:\Windows\system32\slmgr.vbs(291, 5) (null): 0xC004D401. Remember AT&T will start imposing the data cap on May 2nd

If you are an AT&T DSL or U-Verse customer remember that the new data cap starts tomorrow 5/2/2011. You will be limited to 150Gb per month for DSL and 250Gb for U-Verse or you will have to pay extra fees.   Even with an “unlimited plan” you will have the limits imposed. Read more
