We have noticed more and more Dell Optiplex 745 PCs coming into our shop for the same issue, no display at boot time.  If you are having any of the following issues with your Dell Optiplex 745 PCs – no boot at all, no display or frequent lockups then this may be the cause of your problems.

To check your system motherboard for the faulty capacitors just remove the side panel so you can see the board. The motherboard part numbers supported by this guide are UY938, TY565, HH330.

The capacitors you need to look at are right next to the processor and fan assembly. This picture shows the faulty capacitors with the bulging tops. Three of the capacitors even have dried electrolytic solution on the top.

The capacitors that need to be replaced are shown here. Even though only 3 in this picture show signs of failure you should replace all 5 caps to insure proper operation of the system.

To repair the board it will need to be removed from the case. This involves removing all of the power, SATA and data cables. You will also need to remove the PS/2 port card and any other cards installed in the system. Now unscrew the board from the case and remove it.

The capacitors that need to be replaced are as follows:
Qty 4    2200uf 6.3v
Qty 1    1800uf  6.3v

You will need to use low ESR and high temp capacitors for the repair or they will fail again in a month or two.  This page gives more details about the parts, why they fail and which ones to use for the repair.

We have a kit with the proper parts for this repair available for $12.00

Here is a video guide for this repair:

If you don’t want to do the repair yourself, use the service request link above. This board repair run $35 (parts and labor) plus return shipping.
